Free hat pattern anyone?
I’ve been seeing these beautiful 2 color double brim hats EVERYWHERE but I couldn’t find a pattern I really liked in bulky weight yarn. So that left me with 1 choice: I had to figure out how to make it myself! Shout out to the family members who had to try out the prototypes. Y’all some real ones. After releasing my BLM-Bogolan Scarf pattern, I got such a wonderful response and finally reached 1000 followers on Instagram! As a thank you to YOU for your incredible support of me, enjoy this FREE hat pattern!
It’s a great stash-buster for that leftover bulky yarn, or the perfect excuse to try out 1 or 2 skeins of that fancy new colorway you’ve been eyeing without breaking the bank. Make a hat for someone you’re thankful for or for someone who’d surely be thankful. If you do make one, tag me @drcharlieuntangled and use the hashtag #1000ThanksHat.

GENERAL NOTES
Pattern set up
This 2-color double brim hat pattern is a great way to practice knitting in the round and 2 of the most common decreases. AND THAT’S IT! Great near-beginner pattern and way to knit up something pretty quickly! It starts at the cast on edge knitting in the round with your main color and smaller needle size. Then, to create the double brim you fold the cast on edge in and knit each cast on stitch with the corresponding live stitch. Then keep going! Switch colors, a little decreasing, maybe a pom-pom, and BAM! Bestest, warmest, awesomest hat ever.
Tips from the Dr.
This pattern requires you to pick up stitches from the cast on edge. If you’re more comfortable starting with a provisional cast on, feel free to use that instead, picking up the stitches with a 2nd set of circulars or DPNs, folding in the provisional cast on edge and knitting each stitch with the corresponding live stitch
Since knitting in the round is essentially knitting in one giant spiral, you’ll also need to be comfortable with correcting the color jog at the point of a color change. How you do it: when it’s time to change colors, you drop your color A, pick up color B and start knitting the 1st round. Before you knit the 1st stitch of the 2nd round, pick up the right leg of the stitch below the 1st stitch, put it up on the left-hand needle and knit those 2 stitches together. If you’re more of a visual person, check out the video on correcting color jogs by my favorite knitting guru, Staci of Very Pink Knits.
Hat Pattern
Brim
CO 64 st with US 9 (5.5 mm) (or smaller of your 2 needles sizes)
Place marker and join in the round. K with color A for 6.5”
Switch right needle to US 10.5 (6.5 mm) (or larger of your 2 needle sizes)
Fold CO edge in and line up with the live st. K together each st with corresponding CO st. Switch left needle to larger size
Hat Body
Continue K in color A with larger needles until hat measures 5” from the bottom brim edge. Cut color A
For slightly slouchy hat: Attach color B and K until hat measures 8” from the bottom brim edge, being sure to correct the color jog after the 1st round with color B
For fitted hat: Attach color B and K until hat measures 6” from the bottom brim edge, being sure to correct the color jog after the 1st round with color B
Decreases
Continuing with color B, start decreases as follows, switching to dpns if needed
Round 1: *K2tog, K12, ssk, repeat around from * (56 st, 8 decr)
Round 2 (and all even rounds): K around
Round 3: *K2tog, K10, ssk, repeat around from * (48 st, 8 decr)
Round 5: *K2tog, K8, ssk, repeat around from * (40 st, 8 decr)
Round 7: *K2tog, K6, ssk, repeat around from * (32 st, 8 decr)
Round 9: *K2tog, K4, ssk, repeat around from * (24 st, 8 decr)
Round 11: *K2tog, K2, ssk, repeat around from * (16 st, 8 decr)
Round 13: *K2tog, ssk, repeat around from * (8 st, 8 decr)
K around last 8 st
Cut 12” tail. Thread yarn through tapestry needle and weave through remaining 8 st, taking them off the knitting needles as you go. Pull taut to close up the hole and secure end on the inside of the hat
FINISHING NOTES
Feel free to add a pom-pom or a faux fur pom of your choice! If you want to wash your hat while being able to easily remove your accessory, Staci’s got a video for that too! Check it out.
